OK Student Ambassadors
Peace through Understanding

Welcome to the Oklahoma City Middle School Delegation Web Site
People to People Student Ambassadors is an organization begun by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the belief that, if American youth could meet people from other cultures they would realize we are far more alike than different. He knew that the best hope for peace in the world was through bridging cultural gaps and building friendships. The program has been providing opportunities for young people to learn about and visit other countries since 1956.
Outstanding students in Oklahoma and neighboring states were invited to People to People information meetings in October. Those students who attended meetings were invited to interview for the program. Accepted students became part of an Oklahoma delegation of People to People Student Ambassadors and meet monthly during the spring of 2011 to learn and prepare for the travel part of the Great Wall and Beyond program, a 17-day program that focuses on the history and culture of China. Student ambassadors will visit four major cities: Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and Hong Kong. In addition, student ambassadors will visit villages and do home stays to experience the daily life of a typical Chinese family. Highlights of the program, which runs June 18-July 4, 2011, will enable student ambassadors to:
Explore the Great Wall of China, the only man-made structure visible from space; ride a rickshaw through Beijing’s old hutong neighborhoods; experience the culture and language of Chinese theater at the Peking Opera; interact with a host family as you experience Chinese culture firsthand during a home stay; make friends with Chinese students through a series of school visits throughout the country, and enjoy your own lessons in cooking, kung fu, and ping pong; visit a neighborhood committee and understand its role in Chinese government; receive an ambassadorial welcome from the city of Xian, home of the Terra Cotta Warriors Museum; and more.
